Contra Dance

The dance form that gave Fifth Reel its start.

Grand Junction Traditional Dance Society contra dances are held at the Margery Building Ballroom in downtown Grand Junction, upstairs at 523 ½ Main Street. There is a workshop for new dancers from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  and contra dancing continues from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Dancers are treated to live Celtic and traditional fiddle tunes by Fifth Reel and other outstanding local and guest musicians. No experience is necessary since all dances are taught. Come with or without a partner. The half hour "New Dancers Workshop" beginning at 7:00 p.m. is useful for folks who haven't been to a contra dance before. Some basic introductory instructions and figures are demonstrated prior to the actual dance at 7:30.Each dance includes several contras with a couple of waltzes, maybe a polka or even demonstrations of other kinds of dance. Contra Dance prices are $10 Adults, $7 for students over 18, $5 for ages 10 to 17. A Family Dance is held in January right before the regular contra. People ages 5 and up can come and enjoy dancing to live music with their families and friends and community members. Fun and simple dances are taught and called by local music teachers. We have been putting the family dances on since 2003. Each year we enjoy watching as "talls and smalls" dance with one another.
